The Importance of Marriage:  A response to President Obama's affirmation of "gay marriage."

I want to encourage you to be at Second Baptist on Sunday, May 20 at either 9 or 11 because I will be responding to the President's affirmation of "gay marriage."  Obviously, I am greatly disappointed that a sitting president would take such a radical stand on such an important theological, moral and societal issue.  His attempt to redefine marriage and thus the family is irresponsible and malicious.  To ignore the entirety of human history, not to mention God's clear teaching that a marriage consists of one woman and one man, for the sake of political gain, is incomprehensible.

At the same time I urge you to pray for President Obama and to also pray for the gay community; pray they would come to a place of understanding their sin so that repentance and faith in Christ may follow and they would know the life and peace that Christ can bring to their hearts and lives.

As the church, our role is to share the love of Christ without blurring the lines of truth.  I affirm the need for grace toward our President and toward those with whom we disagree, but I also acknowledge the necessity to speak the truth.  We are to extend grace without grace becoming negligent; therefore, the truth must be spoken clearly for all to hear.  And the truth is that marriage was created by God and defined by God as a lifelong union between one man and one woman.  Neither myself nor the President has any place redefining God's truth, if we do, we do so at our own peril.

New Website

We wanted to let everyone know we have just completely re-vamped our website and even added some website addresses to increase traffic to the site and the church!  You can now find us at www.sbchuntsville.com and www.sbchuntsville.org.  The new website has some great new features and I will touch on a few of those here.  I will not go through each page, but I will mention a few highlights!

The first thing we will look at is the Home Page

The home page will have a slide slow with images of current happenings at SBC.  Check out all the pictures so you will know what is going on!  Also, you will notice in the upper right corner, there are 5 small icons.  Each of these represent quick links for different ways of communicating with SBC.  The first takes you to our new interactive calendar, the second takes you to our Facebook page, the third takes you to the SBC Blog, the fourth takes you to the the Twitter page, and the last will direct you to Online Giving. The left menu navigates you through the rest of the site.

The next highlight is the Interactive Calendar.  You can get to the Calendar from the "Who We Are" page and selecting "Calendar" at the bottom.

Once there, you will select "Launch Calendar" and the following will appear

You will notice little dots on the various days.  Each dot represents an activity occurring at the church.  When you select a day, the list of the activities for that day appears on the right side of the screen and you can select each activity for more detail, including contact information on many of them.

Another page is our "Ministries" page

The four bigger ministry logos are featured at the top of the page.  If you select any of the images, it will take you to the webpage for that ministry, and that page will provide more details about that ministry.

We also have a new "Online Giving" page

Again, more detail is provided about what online giving does for the church and how you can go about giving online.

Two of our newest features are the "Pictures" page and the "Media" page.  The first page to show you is the "Pictures" page, which you can access from the "Who We Are" menu.  We will be adding pictures periodically of the various happenings at SBC.  Currently there are many pictures from the construction on the new building.  So, this is a page you will want to check back with often.

Our "Media" page is going to be really exciting  It is also accessible from the "Who We Are" menu.  Pastor Gary's Sunday morning messages will be available here.

To access a message, you will just "Launch Media Player"

The "Media Player" will open up and you will be able to choose which message you want to listen to.  Future messages will have information such as Date and Message name available that will help you choose your message.

One more page to feature is our "Weekday Preschool" page

This page will feature the Parent Handbook and forms such as Registration documents and Employment Application.  The School-Age program is also featured, as well as the prices and age brackets for each class.  This page also features information about our Weekday Staff and New Building information.

The last page of the new site to feature is the "Contact Us" page.

This page provides all methods to contact and communicate with SBC.  There is our address, phone number, links to all our social media pages, as well as a new "Contact Us" form.

One of our favorite features of our new site is it's Mobile Site...viewable from any smart phone!

This is what the home page will look like.  As you can see, you can see the images, as well as all menu options.

All text and pictures can easily be seen on all pages.

Also, the great thing about the Mobile Site is the mapping feature.

Where you see the words "CLICK HERE" will allow you to select that link and it will open up the mapping application on your phone.

That does it for all the highlights for our new website.  Please let us know if there is something else you would like to see and check back frequently for updates.

Thanks again and God Bless!

Happy New Year! Here's a great opportunity for you...

Happy New Year to everyone! I pray you had a wonderful Christmas and that your New Year is blessed.

First, I want to invite everyone to our new series "Balance" during the month of January. When you think about the "why" behind New Year resolutions it's not hard to realize what we're seeking is balance in our lives. So, over the next few weeks that's exactly what we'll be exploring in God's word; it would be great to see you here every Sunday in January.

There's one other opportunity I want to encourage you to take advantage of and that is Financial Peace by Dave Ramsey. January has a unique ability to make us painfully aware of any financial issues we need to deal with. On January 18th, one of our lay leaders, Kevin Riley, will be leading the Financial Peace Seminar every Wednesday night from 6-7:30pm and we would love to have you attend. The cost for the materials is $100 per family and the class runs for approximately 15 weeks. If you are interested please contact the church office at 936.295.6404.

Last month I read an article about financial matters that outlined some of the common symptoms of families who find themselves financially burdened. Many times they are unable to pay regular monthly bills because credit cards have reached their limit and there is no where else to turn. At that point the couple resorts to a second (or third) job to try and keep up; which only places more stress on the family. Husbands and wives end up fighting over finances. Sometimes the problems grow worse and cause couples to feel like their problems are irreconcilable and they end up in divorce or separating.

The trouble we create is often unnecessary, if we would only follow Biblical principles in our money management we could avoid much of it. That's where Financial Peace comes in and provides you with a plan and gives you a renewed sense of purpose and ultimately hope. So make your finances a priority this Spring.
